Human-Chatbot Interaction: When ChatGPT meets an old Typewriter
In the 15th century the printing press revolutionised the dissemination of information. Over time, innovations such as teletypewriters, typewriters, and computers have increased the speed and volume of information. Recent developments of large language models, such as ChatGPT, make it possible to create new texts from prompts. However, many users are unclear about how this works and its implications. To investigate how individuals interact with AI technology, we "hacked" an old typewriter that lets participants interact with a chatbot. We collected data from nearly 1,200 participants during several public events. Our findings show that an AI typewriter is a great conversation piece that stimulates discussion about technological progress, helps participants understand AI's capabilities and limitations, and provides insights into participants' concepts of AI, their expectations and concerns. Finally, we discuss opportunities for bringing old culture and technology together with modern ones for better understanding and reflection.
