Our research delves into the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance Security Operations Center (SOC) tasks. We introduce CyberSOCEval, a new suite of open-source benchmarks for Malware Analysis and Threat Intelligence Reasoning.

The benchmarks reveal that larger, more modern LLMs perform better, yet current models are far from saturating our evaluations, indicating significant room for improvement in cyber defensive capabilities.

Malware Analysis: Models answered between 23-34% correctly. Performance was not affected by filtering report output, suggesting core reasoning capabilities are key.

Threat Intelligence Reasoning: Vision-capable models scored 43-53% correctly using image inputs, and 5-10% higher with text inputs. This highlights the need for robust multimodal understanding.

Reasoning Models: We did not observe a large performance boost from models leveraging test-time scaling in cybersecurity, suggesting a need for more targeted training in this domain.
